Knowing the law is essential – but so is being able to communicate about it. Join writing coach and former attorney Rick Horowitz for a lively and practical writing workshop that will reintroduce you to your legal-writing toolbox, including a few tools you didn’t know were in there.

“More Effective Writing, for More Effective Lawyers” will explore the fundamentals (and the critical details) of creating clear, well-organized, persuasive legal documents. Briefs, memos, client letters, even daily correspondence – they’ll all benefit from your deeper understanding of what goes into successful writing. Writing that opens and closes strongly, flows logically, presents pertinent information to your target audience understandably, and uses the right words and the right tone for this task, this time.

You’ll examine good and not-so-good writing to see what worked, what didn’t, and why. You’ll get advice for steering clear of the grammar and usage potholes that can undermine your credibility. You’ll even learn tips for avoiding that dreaded “legalese” while still getting the job done! (There’s a reason people tell lawyer jokes…)

You'll come away with new skills, new strategies, and new confidence.

Here, for instance, is Rick’s recent invitation to Louisville Bar Association members for a June seminar – it’ll give you a taste of what’s in store when you put him in front of your own lawyers!

Rick Talks Writing on “Beyond the Book”!

Rick chats with podcast host Christopher Kenneally of the Copyright Clearance Center about closing the gap between legal writing and…good writing. You’ll definitely want to listen in:

And now, a note from Rick:

Lively and useful discussions. Plenty of helpful writing, organizing, and editing tips for – and from – lawyers with a wide range of writing experience. Practical guidance – and even moral support – for navigating the shoals of intra-office writing demands. (Or, “Why Are They Messing With My Stuff, and How Should I Handle It?”)

That’s just some of what you can expect from “More Effective Writing Makes More Effective Lawyers,” my all-day workshop, offered monthly as part of the DC Bar's highly regarded Continuing Legal Education program, and elsewhere as that little list below indicates.

I’ll be back at the DC Bar on Friday, January 25, and then again on Friday, February 22. Seating for each session is limited, so sign up now. And tell your lawyer friends! (Everybody has lawyer friends, right?)              R.H.
